Water Kefir

Have you been playing around with water kefir for a while? If you have I'm hoping you have moved past the stock standard recipe of water kefir grains, sugar, and water. I used to make the stock standard water kefir and have previously written about it not being my preferred probiotic drink. But that was back in 2014 and since then I've got a bit adventurous with it.

Fermented Water Kefir Top Tips

I probably need to remind you that I ferment for food medicine so I'm not looking for an alternative to soft drink or soda. I'm looking for medicine! When you boost your water kefir by adding an organic dried fig, a pinch of bi-carb soda, a slice of lemon, 1/4 teaspoon crushed organic eggshell and a splash of blackstrap molasses you end up with a far more powerful probiotic then the stock standard recipe offers.

And here's why:

The health benefits of figs come from the presence of minerals, vitamins, and fiber contained in the fruit. Figs contain a wealth of beneficial nutrients, including vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, calcium, iron, phosphorus, manganese, sodium, potassium, and chlorine.

Drinking baking soda - also called bicarbonate of soda or sodium bicarbonate―dissolved in water, has long been used to relieve the signs and symptoms of arthritis, indigestion, heartburn, and infection, among other maladies. Baking soda, consumed in moderate portions and at appropriate times, helps bring about healthy body biochemistry.

Lemons are loaded with healthy benefits, and particularly, they're a great vitamin C food source. One cup of fresh lemon juice provides 187 percent of your daily recommended serving of vitamin C — take that, oranges! Lemon juice also offers up a healthy serving of potassium, magnesium and copper.

High-quality eggshells contain 27 essential micro elements but they're mostly composed of calcium carbonate, a form and structure that's very similar to our bones and teeth. In animal and human tests, eggshell calcium shows increased bone density, less arthritic pain, and even stimulates cartilage growth.

Blackstrap molasses has the lowest sugar content of any sugar cane product. The wonderment of blackstrap molasses is that it's unlike refined sugar, which has zero nutritional value. Blackstrap molasses contains vital vitamins and minerals, such as iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin B6, and selenium.
